F-region peak electron density data recorded during the first SUNDIAL campaign are compared with a first principles ionospheric model, the Utah State University model, and an empirical ionospheric model, the International Reference Ionosphere, or IRI, which use the CCIR maps of the F-region. Both models are successful in reproducing the main features of the diurnal structure in the observations, with the IRI being marginally better. The main deficiency of the first principles model was that it underestimated the electron density in the pre-dawn minimum.
