The configuration of an interferometer, i.e., the disposition of the optical components which compose it, is chosen to provide sensitivity to a wide range of signals. Two basic configurations-Michelson and Sagnac interferometers-are described, as well as a range of advanced `extensions' which improve performance. The main limitations to sensitivity are discussed and methods of pushing the limits in the future are introduced. .
