The transfer matrix is a very efficient tool for computing symmetrical systems, both in light optics and in charged-particle optics. Two significative examples are considered: a catadioptric instrument as reflector telescope, and a charged-particle system as α-magnetic spectrometer. The analysis of all symmetrical systems is greatly facilitated by only studying the properties of the first semisystem.
