The paper presents a three-way intercomparison of the error analysis of data synthesis methods used in the wave interaction and partial reflection experiments; namely, the errors involved in synthesizing wave interaction data, partial reflection data based on volume-scatterer and partial reflection theory based on classical single-scatterer theory. An over-deterministic electron-density synthesis method is described in terms of wave interaction equations first and then generalized to apply to partial reflection volume-scatterer case. For the single-scatterer case, the classical partial reflection data reduction method of Belrose and Burke (1964) was used. The relative magnitude of errors between wave interaction and partial reflection experiments which are two major experimental techniques for studying the D-region of the ionosphere, are found to agree with the observations of Thrane (1974).
