The present use of Nimbus 4 BUV and ground-based network data for the investigation of interannual total ozone distribution variations has yielded significant improvements in analysis spatial resolution and reliability. The characteristic features of the quasi-biennial oscillations (QBO) and four-year oscillations (FYO) are investigated through the examination of global pattern time changes as well as some spatial mean values. The QBO is characterized in total ozone by large time and space variabilities, while the FYO total ozone suggests a global phenomenon. The behaviors of both the QBO and FYO are for the first time described in terms of the periodic modulations of global patterns.
