Phobos-2 observed a boundary (the so-called planetopause) separating the dominance regions of the solar wind and of the plasma of planetary origin. It is shown that the properties of this boundary are similar to those of Comet Halley's cometopause and to those of the chemical boundary observed on Venus during periods of high dynamic pressures of the solar wind. Numerical simulation of the solar-wind interaction with Mars shows intense mass loading of the solar-wind flux by planetary ions due to charge-exchange processes and photoionization. As a result, a sharp decrease in the proton density of the solar wind occurs near the observed planetopause in the Mars magnetosheath.
