On 9 January 2002 and 14 November 2001, the Sao Luis, Brazil, 30 MHz coherent scatter radar has detected unique day-time E region echoes scattered from the equatorial electrojet plasma irregularities. The back-scatter radar echoes on these days exihibit temporal and spatial quasi-oscillations of the electrojet echoing layer. Two dimensional spectral analysis of the magnetic field perturbation (a measure of the strength of the equatorial electrojet) observed by a nearby magnetometer on these days have shown short period waves (20 to 60 minutes) which might correspond to atmospheric gravity waves. During these days GOES 8 satellite IR images have indicated tropospheric deep convection activities at horizontal distances between 200 and 500 km north-east of Sao Luis. The results of this study suggest the generation of gravity waves from tropospheric convection and the coupling of the convection to the E region ionosphere through the wind fields of gravity waves thereby modulating the background electric field and causing the quasi-oscillations observed in the radar and magnetic field perturbation data on 9 January 2002 and 14 November 2001.
