Techniques have been developed to derived global scale maps of magnetic perturbations due to field aligned currents in the polar regions using data from engineering magnetometers on the Iridium system satellites. Because the satellites and instruments of the Iridium system were not designed with this purpose in mind, validating the reliability and accuracy of products derived from Iridium data is especially important. We report inter-comparison of magnetic perturbations maps from Iridium with simultaneous DMSP magnetometer observations. Approximately one hour Iridium data accumulations are needed to derive magnetic perturbation patterns so events are chosen for which the IMF is stable in direction to within 25 degrees for at least three hours. Data from February 1999 through March 2001 are used for which over 300 candidate stable IMF cases were identified in ACE data. Intervals were then selected for various IMF conditions giving qualitatively ordered derived magnetic perturbation patterns. DMSP data during these times were then examined and cases have data free of extraneous signals were selected for study. Perturbation maps were then derived using 1-hour of Iridium data centered on the DMSP pass. The perturbation map is then evaluated along the DMSP track allowing direct comparison against the derived and measured perturbations. The collection of events allows an assessment of the reliability in the inferred location and intensity of field aligned currents determined from the Iridium data.
