Waves have been observed in the F2 region which propagate selectively roughly from west to east (also north-south and south-east) with a velocity of 330-350 m/s; the waves are in a coordinate system associated with a terminator that moves through observed radiating regions in the evening. However, these waves are not the cause of the superrotation of the upper atmosphere, as they do not have the necessary intensity and direction. Furthermore, long-lived variations of O I 6300-A emission intensity can be considered as a standing or slowly moving wave in the F2 region which is generated by the continuous supersonic motion of the terminator in the atmosphere.
