Published data on the intensity of plasma turbulence (PT) generated by a spacecraft moving in the F-layer plasma are examined, with emphasis on results from the Spacelab-2 flight concerning plasma wave turbulence around the Shuttle (see Gurnett et al., 1988). Using these data, an attempt is made to derive an empirical dependence of the PT intensity on the rate of mass transfer from the surface of the spacecraft. It is shown that the generation of the intense PT may be responsible for a number of optical and radio-physical effects associated with the injection of a weakly ionized gas jet into the ionospheric plasma.
