We present a study of broadband extra low frequency (BB-ELF) electric fields in the mid-altitude cusp during periods of southward interplanetary magnetic field, using data from the Cluster spacecraft. Magnetospheric boundary layers are identified and classified in the ionosphere according to particle precipitation characteristics. We find that the electric field fluctuations are contained within the cusp/LLBL region, and can be used as an indicator of the equatorward edge of the cusp/LLBL region. The correlation between the power spectral density of the electric field fluctuations around 1 Hz and various ion number and energy fluxes were investigated. The level of fluctuations show a strong positive correlation with the total field-aligned ion energy flux.
