WHILE spending the late winter months at Paignton, in Devon, I
frequently watched, through a telescope, shore birds of various kinds
stalking game on the low tide sands. These abound with sand-eels, which
lie, perfectly concealed, about an inch below the surface, and are
caught in the following way by the gulls.
