StarView is a user interface onto the Space Telescope Data Archive and Distribution Service (ST-DADS). Scientists use StarView to browse the DADS catalog for archived files they wish to retrieve. Generally, user interfaces are limited in functionality by the database access medium and are limited in scope by the contents of the database. StarView incorporates a local database which gives users capabilities beyond that of the database medium and provides users with a faster response time. Most importantly, however, it broadens the view of the data by providing methods for manipulating derived attributes, and it permits scientists to understand the catalog data in a context far beyond that of just the DADS catalog.
