Recent advances in studies of planetary nebulae and protoplanetary discs based on integral field spectro-imaging (IFS) observations made with the Very Large Telescope are discussed. In the best spirit of Mike Seaton's pioneering work, the unique capabilities of IFS when backed up by good-quality atomic data allow us to probe the small-scale structure of ionized nebulae and to extract quantitative information from a host of new spectral diagnostics in a way that has not been possible before.
