Instrumental neutron activation analysis with high-resolution lithium-drifted germanium detectors was used to determine 23 elements in a wide variety of igneous rocks. Principal -rays used in the determinations and their major interferences are listed. Redetermined energies of -rays from 59 Fe are more accurate than those previously reported. Elements determined include ahnost all alkalies, many lanthanides and transition elements, and several strongly lithophilic trace elements which are useful as indices of geochemical differentiation. Data are reported for six U.S.G.S. standard rocks, a sub-alkaline abyssal basalt and a rhyolite obsidian. Among the significant trends indicated by elemental ratios for these rocks are increases in K / Cs and Ba / Cs with differentiation, and Zr / Hf ratios in the whole rocks which are lower than those previously observed in zircon separates. Possible extensions and improvements of the technique, which can lead to the determination of at least 6 additional elements, are discussed.
