Electromagnetic sawtooth waves, supposedly generated in pulsar environments, have been the subject of numerous publications. These waves are of such magnitude as to drive all plasma particles with relativistic velocities. It is shown analytically that such waves are subject to fast instabilities that destroy them in a time comparable to the oscillation period. They are stabilized in the presence of a strong magnetic field.
