The generation of an intense longitudinal electric field on closed geomagnetic field lines is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the field is generated as a result of the injection of high-energy electrons into a flux tube which initially contains only cold plasma of ionospheric origin. The field generation is accompanied by the formation of collisionless rarefaction shock waves, on which the main potential drop is concentrated. Numerical simulation results are presented which elucidate the physical picture of the electric-field generation.
