The spectrum of gamma rays in the TeV band produced by inverse Compton scattering of relativistic electrons on synchrotron photons in the relativistic jets of Markarian 421 and 501 is calculated, and shown to give satisfactory agreement with observed spectra. Because of the flaring nature of the TeV radiation, it is assumed that the emission occurs in a very small region in the jet, of scale less than a light day. The spectrum of electrons is deduced from the synchrotron radiation, and the consequences of assuming different values of magnetic field strength and of Lorentz factor Gamma of the jet are shown. For a strong flaring state of Markarian 421, a magnetic field strength of about 0.03 gauss, and Gamma> 15 are indicated, and for the highest state of Markarian 501, ~0.03-0.1 gauss and Gamma>=10, after allowing for the probable effects of photon losses in traversing intergalactic space. It is also shown that the Markarian 501 spectrum above 1 TeV is expected to change rather little despite large changes that are observed in its X-ray synchrotron spectrum.
