Global texture, a topological defect formed by the breaking of a suitable global symmetry, has recently been advocated as a new candidate for the seeds which promote structure formation in the early universe. We examine the initial conditions that one would expect to arise from the symmetry breaking in one, two and three spatial dimensional models. Using the concept of partial windings we are able to ascribe some sense of locality to the textures without destroying their inherent topological structure. By making some assumptions about the dynamical evolution, we obtain estimates of texture unwinding rates in good agreement with existing numerical simulations.
