We present the first analysis of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging survey of main belt asteroids. Over fifty asteroids have been imaged in the visible and near IR with the Wide-Field/Planetary Camera 2. We have concentrated on analyzing observations of the largest asteroids and the ones with companions, and report results on studies of surface variegation of resolved bodies as well as the relative reflectivity of the companions between 0.43 and 1.04 microns. The figure shows a 0.67 micron image of asteroid 1 Ceres and a ratio map of the strength of the 0.7 micron hydration feature-- darker regions are hydrated at the 10 sigma level. The companions generally have the same color as their primaries, with a few exceptions.
Reduction of the data is made possible by grant HST-GO-08583.08A from the Space Telescope Science Institute.
