We propose to obtain near-infrared photometry for a large sample of open cluster and nearby field stars. The photometry will be used to test the surprising results for open cluster distance scales from the HIPPARCOS satellite mission, which often vary considerably from traditional main sequence fitting results. Near-infrared colors are substantially less sensitive to metallicity, helium abundance, and reddening variations that limit the accuracy of distance determinations from optical colors. The photometry will also be important for calibrating new theoretical models being produced by our group.
