It is shown that the conformally invariant scalar field may possess anomalous vacuum mean values in a Tolman universe of any type (closed, open, or quasi-Euclidean). At early stages of the evolution of the universe, these values lead to the existence of a negative energy in the closed and quasi-Euclidean models in the presence of a negative squared bare mass, and the open model, whenever the square of the bare mass is smaller than that of the Planckian mass. The influence of negative energy on some cosmological models is examined.
