The solar-cycle-related variation in the annual means of the horizontal component of the geomagnetic field between 1952 and 1980 at European observatories is discussed in terms of magnetic and electromagnetic induction. The contribution of the magnetic induction appears to be important, accounting for a large part of the observed variation, while the contribution of the electromagnetic induction seems to be masked by either a spurious variation in the dipole field with external sources or a real variation from a core source. The lateral variation of magnetic properties of the lithosphere in Europe has been derived and is discussed in terms of tectonic structure.
