IN a series of short communications, Bautzmann, Holtfreter, Spemann and Mangold1 have recently reported the results of experiments in which they attempted to obtain typical organiser reactions (that is, the induction of a neural plate in the presumptive epidermis in Triton) by organisers which had been killed. Marx2 had previously demonstrated that inductions could be performed by organisers which had been narcotised by trichlorbutyl alcohol to such an extent that they degenerated and were absorbed, while Spemann3 had obtained inductions by organisers which had been crushed, but not by those which had been frozen or dried.
