The electromagnetic response of a conducting cylinder, embedded in a poorly conducting homogeneous Earth, for overhead arbitrarily located sheet current and line current sources, is examined. The studied parameters include source period (T = 10 s-24 h), sheet current width (W = 200-800 km) and lateral displacement (D = 100-400 km) of the field sources' axes relative to the cylinder's axis. The results show that both source geometry and lateral distance between the axis of the source and the conducting cylinder are important factors in the description of cylinder response. In the short period range (T = 10 s-30 min) the anomalous Ex/Hy and Hz/Hy ratios over the cylinder are similar, however, with increasing period the anomalies for the line current source are reduced in value compared with those for the sheet current source.
