The principal-components method is applied to a time series of solar magnetograms to calculate the integral indices of the large-scale solar magnetic field. Two indices which are thus obtained are employed to calculate the solar-wind velocity in earth orbit by multidimensional linear regression, using solar data for the period from March 31 to August 27, 1979.
