Four solar cosmic ray events are studied. Analyses of the May 7, 1978 event clearly indicate that the propagation of the solar protons in the IMF between sun and earth was essentially scatter-free. The dependence of the onset time on the reciprocal of the solar proton speed, the duration of the proton injection into the IMF as a function of energy, the time dependence of the energy spectra of the protons at earth and sun, and the energy dependence of intensity-time profiles at the event onset are studied. The results indicate that the acceleration of the flare protons at the sun was time-extended. Results of a similar analysis of the February 16, 1984 event are summarized, and parameters relevant to the flare proton acceleration mechanism are deduced for the November 22, 1977 event. Previous analyses for the June 3, 1982 event are used to support the idea of an energy-dependent acceleration and transport of protons at the sun. The results for all four events are used to show that the solar protons were probably accelerated by coronal shocks.
