Eight cases of increase in the intensity of protons and alpha particles in the energy range 1-4.5 MeV/nucleon were found among Prognoz-satellite observations during 1972-1973. It was found that the ratio of proton to alpha intensities was constant as a rule. The intensity increases are interpreted in a model with decreasing mean free path. Particle acceleration, responsible for the intensity increase, occurs at the shock front; the particles after reflection from the shock front are scattered on inhomogeneities located before the front in the interplanetary medium. As the shock approaches, the effective mean free path of the region where acceleration occurs is reduced.
