Data from neutron monitoring stations were used to analyze the cosmic-ray increase before the Forbush decrease of April 1971, followed by a sudden storm commencement. Increase distribution curves were obtained for asymptotic longitudes at time intervals of 1 to 6 hrs before the sudden commencement. Expected increases in cosmic-ray intensity calculated from shock wave and interplanetary magnetic field data were in reasonable agreement with the experimental data for the region between 30 degrees W and 90 degrees E.
