Progress in the search for planetary companions of other stars is reviewed, and the difficulties of the task are discussed. Following a brief review of the nature of stars and planets and historical observations of stellar motions and perturbations due to invisible companion stars, the development of modern photographic methods of observing stellar perturbations and means for the analysis of these perturbations are discussed. Observations of the unseen companions of nearby stars are then presented, with particular attention given to the discovery of the planetary companions of Barnard's star at Sproul Observatory and the characteristics of the two presumed planets as derived from 18 years of astrometric observations. It is noted that indications of companions with masses 10 to 20 times that of Jupiter have been found for several close stars, and the need for continued investigations is emphasized.
