The following millimeter-wave oscillators are compared with respect to their application as tools in radio astronomy: klystrons, backward-wave oscillators, Gunn oscillators, IMPATT oscillators, and multipliers. The characteristics studied are noise, output power, feed characteristics, lifetime, cost, electrical and mechanical compatibility, frequency stability, and output level constant.
