We present the in-flight performance of the balloon-borne High Energy Focusing Telescope (HEFT) during its maiden flight in May 2005. HEFT is based on an array of three multilayer-coated grazing incidence telescopes that operate from 6 to 68 keV. It is among the first generation of focusing telescopes in the hard X-ray band above 10 keV. As such, it achieves orders of magnitude improvements in sensitivity compared to instruments based on coded apertures and other indirect imaging techniques that have traditionally been employed in this energy band. In addition, the compact focal planes enable high-performance detectors with good spectral resolution to be employed. On its maiden flight from Fort Sumner, NM, HEFT observed several celestial targets at energies above the atmospheric cut-off at about 20 keV. In this presentation, we describe the imaging of the Crab Nebula and Cygnus X-1, as well as in-flight measurements of the background spectrum at balloon altitudes. We assess the throughput of the instrument based on the observations of the Crab Nebula.
