Some defects of common ray-tracing procedures for high-order aspheric surface are noted and a new reference sphere applied to ray tracing is presented. Its curvature is variable, which is different from the common osculating sphere introduced in the current literature. Concerning the iteration approach precision, a basic numeric criterion with a floating quality attached and the corresponding program control are discussed.
