We use a novel approach based on wavelet analysis methods, functional principal component analysis, and functional canonical correlation techniques in order to produce a better index of storm activity. The main result of our work is construction of a functional wavelet-based index of magnetic storm activity, which is an improved version of the existing wavelet-based index of magnetic storm activity (WISA). In the latter, the daily variation was assumed to be constant, which was a simplifying assumption. Here, we address the fact that the daily periodic component varies from day to day. We construct a "cleaner" index by removing non-constant daily Sq-variations. We also use a functional canonical correlation analysis to show that the new technique produces the index of storm activity that has fewer local time features attributable to the daily periodic variations.
