If the group velocity of a wave pulse equals the phase velocity of its central wave, particles with an appropriate velocity component along the ambient magnetic field experience Landau resonance with the whole group of waves simultaneously. For whistlers, it occurs if the central frequency equals half the electron gyrofrequency. The enhanced Landau resonant diffusion thus caused makes Dungey's mechanism for preferential triggering of VLF emissions at this frequency more effective.
