The structural features of two significant configurations of welded breccia in Muong Nong-type tektites from the Ubon Ratchanthani region of Thailand are described. The first tektite specimen (44.8 g) contains a buried bed of welded breccia with an average thickness of 1.2 mm. The second specimen weighing 30.6 g, contains a V-shaped fissure at least 1 cm deep which is apparently spalled out of near-planer layered glass with a thickness normal to the layering of at least 1.5 cm. The breccia structures in the specimens show evidence of having experienced two distinct periods of high temperatures during their formation, separated by a minimum of several minutes of cooling through the annealing range. The presence of an interval between the heating phases would imply a prolonged multistage formation process entirely at the site of origin. In contrast, theories of ejection of tektite glass from terrestrial meteorite impact craters or cometary collision events imply instant formation. Photomicrographs of the welded breccia structures are provided.
