The effect of the choice of ice particle type in the parameterization of cloud microphysics on the simulated cloud and precipitation properties is investigated. Generalized parameterization equations for riming and deposition rates as well as sedimentation fluxes are given. Simulation studies with a mesoscale numerical weather prediction model for a two-dimensional flow over a hill show that the fields of condensate content and precipitation strongly depend on the interpretation of the sedimenting ice particles as e.g., graupel or unrimed aggregates. A parameterization model to account for the variation of particle attributes due to riming is presented.
