We propose to observe three candidate target fields from the AXAF deep field with WFPC2 in two bands. We will obtain high angular resolution images of the host galaxies of the AGNs detected in the X-rays. We will observe the target areas in 3 WFPC2 fields, each one of which contains a number of interesting objects that have been detected in the X-rays. Several ongoing programs at ground based telescopes are ensuring that all the detected AGNs have multicolor NIR and optical photometry. However, only the HST data will allow us to disentangle the contribution of the host galaxy from the AGN and resolve the morphology of the former. This will allow us to assess the role of tidal interactions and distorted morphologies in enhancing the number density of AGNs at high redshift, and, by detecting color gradients, to clarify the relation between AGN and starburst activity in the past.
