Scientific paper

We propose to obtain high resolution WFPC2 images of four proto-planetary nebulae {PPN} found to show bipolar morphologies in ground-based observations. Such high quality images of PPN will help us to determine the origin of such interesting substructures as halos, ansae, and knots, and to answer the question of whether the bipolar morphologies observed in planetary nebulae are the result of nurture {due to shaping by interacting winds} or nature {inheritance from their AGB progenitors}, and when such morphologies develop in the course of post-AGB evolution.
