We propose to use NIRSPEC at R=3000 to examine heir lines in a set of embedded (Class I) protostars whose disk accretion/mass outflow diagnostics and stellar rotation rates indicate they are at an earlier evolutionary stage than most T Tauri (Class II) stars. This line forms under conditions resembling resonant scattering, making it an extraordinarily sensitive probe of the launch region of accretion powered winds. In particular, heir has the potential to discriminate among competing theories for the origin of the accretion- powered winds that collimate into jets and outflows on larger spatial scales. The 1 micron grating setting will also yield simultaneous observations of 3 Paschen lines that likely arise in magnetospheric accretion funnels, several forbidden lines formed in the jet, and a measure of the excess continuum emission from accretion activity, thus enabling a deeper understanding of the relation between accretion and outflow in forming stars.
