The angular distribution of events from SN 1987A seen in the water Cherenkov detectors has a small probability of being due to neutrinos. The data can be explained by a new particle which interacts coherently with the oxygen nucleus, producing γ rays. In order to be consistent with the observations, and with protoneutron star dynamics, the interaction of the new particle with baryonic matter should be of the same order as, or somewhat weaker than, that of neutrinos.
