A method developed by Dolgoarshinnykh (1976) is used for the identification of 12-hour quiet and disturbed periods of geomagnetic activity. The data sample consisted of 50 quiet and 53 disturbed periods during 1967-1968. The quiet and disturbed periods were identified from the following parameters of the interplanetary medium: (1) the interplanetary magnetic field strength, B; (2) the B(x), B(y), and B(z) components of B in solar-ecliptic coordinates; (3) the velocity and density of the solar wind; (4) the mean-square deviations of the mean-hourly values of B(x), B(y), and B(z); (5) the absolute value of B(z); and (6) a parameter signifying the sum of negative values of B(z) for a specified period.
