A method of identification of primary cosmic ray particles of gamma families with visible energies above 800 TeV has been investigated by using the results of Monte Carlo simulation. It has been found that, for proton primaries, the lateral distribution of certain parameters of gamma families may be taken as a reliable criterion. The experimental data of big gamma families obtained from the Mt. Kanbala emulsion chamber experiment have been analyzed.
