We are performing a survey a high proper motion stars at low galactic latitudes, in which we have identified > 130 new stars with proper motion (mu)> 0.5 arcsec yr^-1. These include a set of 21 relatively faint (R> 18) stars, several of which we suspect to be very cool white dwarfs similar to those identified by Oppenheimer et al. (2001), and which are claimed to be evidence for a population of primordial white dwarfs in the halo. We propose to obtain spectra from 16 candidate old white dwarfs, and determine whether or not they can also be associated with a population of halo white dwarfs.
