The QSO 4C 55.27 has an emission-line redshift of z = 1.24. An absorption doublet at 3840 Å is identified with Mg II λ2800 at z = 0.374. Direct images of the field show what appears to be a small group of galaxies near the position of the QSO. Spectroscopy of the nearest object, 5arcsec.0 from the QSO, shows it to have the spectrum of a galaxy at z = 0.373. The spectrum is normal for a luminous giant elliptical galaxy. The authors conclude that material associated with the galaxy, but located at least 21 kpc from its center, is responsible for the Mg II absorption in the QSO.
