Analysis of orbital plane spacing shows that Cosmos satellites in near-circular orbits of 105 minute period provide the global coverage needed for a navigation system. Three such groups have been identified. Decoding of radio transmissions from these satellites reveals that standard time information is being relayed. Different types of transmission are observed from the main and supplementary systems currently operational.
