The sharp field change (or jerk) observed in 1969 is investigated on the basis of mean yearly values of the geomagnetic field as determined from worldwide observatories. Several ways to identify the jerk are proposed, and the spatial distribution of the jerk amplitude is constructed for the European region. The jerk is interpreted as an additional field disturbance in the course of a certain period of time on the background of the regular secular variation. It can be caused by variations of either global or regional field sources inside the earth.
