A satellite was accidentally discovered near the asteroid Ida by the Galileo spacecraft. Multiple sightings should permit its orbit to be determined. These observations will test theories about asteroid formation, their age and composition, and the dynamics of three-body orbit problems. Details about the observations and theories are presented in this article.
