ICALA (Industrial Centre for Airborne Atmospheric- and Earth-Observation) is a partnership between Fokker Space & Systems (FSS), the National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) and Eurosense/KLM Aerocarto. This Dutch initiative presents an organisation to stimulate the operational application of airborne (remote sensing) sensors. The objective of ICALA is, besides the commercial one, to make airborne remote sensing applications operational and commercialise and to support pre-operational research. Further ICALA also aims at stimulating and supporting the development of user-driven applications. On the one hand a number of prototype remote sensing sensors and applications are developed at universities and institutes for scientific or development reasons, which are then not further used. On the other hand a demand exists for operational systems. These should cover an end-to-end service from user requirement specification to geophysical data product delivery. Furthermore the operational costs are to be in balance with the final end product. ICALA intends to overcome this gap between the prototype applications and the user demands by embedding the sensors in an industrial infrastructure, providing the platforms, dataprocessing and operating personnel. As an example, first promising testflights with a GOME pre-breadboard initiated the development of ASAA (Airborne System for Atmospheric Applications), which is an end-to-end user-defined trace gas and aerosol remote sensing measuring system for the troposphere.
