Hypersensitizing techniques and some aspects of the physics of photographic films are reviewed. Hypersensitizing refers to post-manufacturing processes applied in astronomical observatories to increase plate speed and quantum efficiency and to reduce or eliminate reciprocity failure. The procedures have improved older types of plates and are considered essential in the case of new fine-grain materials which have higher resolving power but barely acceptable speed before treatment. Hypersensitizing techniques considered include pre-exposure flashing (in which the plate is momentarily irradiated by light from an argon lamp), plate cooling (in the range -20 to -100 C in a dry atmosphere), plate baking (at 50-75 C which removes oxygen and water from the emulsion), and hydrogenation (thought to be most effective).
